Message From Dean Biological Sciences

The Faculty of Biological Sciences was established in 1971 as a Department of Biological Sciences. Later, in 2006, due to the growing trends and the high influx of students in the field of Biological Sciences, the department was upgraded to faculty level with eight disciplines, emerging as eight departments including: Zoology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Plant Sciences, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and newly established Departments of Environmental Sciences and Pharmacy. Along with this infrastructure development, the Faculty has witnessed remarkable growth and development in terms of its dual mission of teaching and research. Special emphasis has been invested in upgrading the existing technology and research capacity. Highly skilled and qualified researchers are contributing in this mission as faculty members. This faculty is one of the few in our country that offers a comprehensive degree programs at BS, M.Sc, M.Phil and Ph.D levels. We have the largest herbarium in the country having 0.2 million collection of exotic and indigenous plant material. Our Botanical Garden has a large number of medicinal plants and plants of economic importance.

The Faculty of Biological Sciences produces highly skilled manpower in relevant research domain. The Faculty has produced 477 B.S., 2740 M.Sc., 3545 M.Phil and 572 Ph.D graduates upto 2021. Our productivity is comparable to that of any world-class academic institute. Our academic programs are tailored to meet the needs of life sciences in the region and across the world. These programs also have a high success rate for placement of students in relevant professional fields and many of them are contributing significantly at different academic, research and industrial positions in some outstanding institutions of the country.

Research and innovation has always been the hallmark of this faculty. Our research is regularly publishing in some of the world-class journals of Biological Sciences. From January, 2019 to August, 2021, our faculty has published more than 1581 research articles with a significant rise in the output from previous years reiterating scientific grandeur. Funding for our research programs primarily comes from organizations like HEC, PSF, PCST, USAID, DAAD, BRITISH COUNCIL, NIH-USA, PARC, PHRC, PAS, NRPU, Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Key Research & Development Program of China, Professional Association of the Alliance of International Science Organization, The International Union of Biological Sciences, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) Germany and WHO. Our scientists are fully aware of the global trends and are now putting more efforts in widening the scope of their research in order to solve basic problems and to translate the research for the socio-economic uplift of the country. It is our dream to produce a cadre of technology leaders, equipped with knowledge to promote reliance on indigenous scientific capabilities and strengthen the economic development of the nation.
